Some couriers require a post code to access the tracking results (if so, there's mostly no "(optional)" behind it or there's a note telling you when to enter it.
For other couriers, you might get additional information if you enter it - e.g. for the German version of DHL tracking you will receive more detailed recipient information by supplying the correct post code.
